Job Opportunities: Post-Doctoral Researcher and Ph.D Student in Marine Ecosystem Modelling, Thessaloniki, Greece

Two exciting job opportunities for a Post-Doctoral Researcher and a Ph.D student to join the EcoScope Team at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Thessaloniki, Greece.

Post-doctoral researcher in marine ecosystem modelling

Description

The post-doctoral researcher will explore the development, application and analysis of ecosystem and stock assessment models in the Mediterranean Sea under climate change and fisheries impact. Within the EcoScope project, the researcher will work on the development and application of quantitative tools towards an ecocentric fisheries management taking into account environmental, oceanographic and climatic drivers. This includes working on spatial and temporal modelling of marine ecosystems, analysing oceanographic and fisheries time-series and develop indicators that can be used for the fisheries management with the ecosystem context.

Qualifications

The successful applicant will hold a PhD degree in marine biology/ecology, fisheries or related fields, and document solid background in ecological theory, marine populations dynamics, ecosystem modeling and/or fisheries stock assessment and management. Skills in statistics, programming experience and/or knowledge of Ecopath (with Ecosim and Ecospace) are advantageous. Working experience with multidisciplinary groups and previous involvement in European projects is desirable. Excellent oral and writing communication skills in English, creative thinking, good cooperative skills and ability to work independently are required.

The PhD student will (1) assess stock status and fishing pressure of Mediterranean marine stocks, (2) explore the output of ecosystem models and scenarios towards ecocentric fisheries management, and (3) identify efficient tools for improving fisheries management in data-poor areas within the ecosystem context.

Qualifications

The successful applicant will hold a postgraduate (MSc) degree in marine biology/ecology, fisheries, oceanography or related fields. Experience in ecosystem modeling and/or fisheries stock assessment and management is an asset. Skills in statistics, programming experience and knowledge of Ecopath or stock assessment modeling are advantageous.
